AMERICAN ECOLOGY APPOINTS SCOTT NICHOLSON
DIRECTOR OF
HAZARDOUS WASTE OPERATIONS
Nicholson Brings 22 Years of Industry and Government Experience
BOISE, Idaho - Stephen Romano, President and Chief Executive Officer of American Ecology Corporation [NASDAQ: ECOL], today announced the appointment of J. Scott Nicholson as Director of Hazardous Waste Operations. Nicholson will manage the Company's three hazardous waste treatment, storage and disposal facilities in Nevada, Idaho and Texas, and its industrial and municipal solid waste landfill also located in Texas. Nicholson joined American Ecology in April, 2001 as Vice President and General Manager of the Idaho facility.

Nicholson previously served in environmental, operations, and engineering positions for competitors Chemical Waste Management and USPCI (now Safety-Kleen) at disposal facilities in Texas and Oklahoma. Nicholson was also President and Managing Partner of AuditSource, an environmental compliance and audit firm, and was a hazardous waste manager and environmental engineer with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Nicholson holds an M.S. in Civil (Environmental) Engineering from the University of Texas, Arlington.
Simon Bell, previously Environmental Manager at US Ecology Idaho, has been promoted to Facility Manager for the Grand View, Idaho facility. Bell joined the Company in March 2001, having previously served as Facility Manager at competitor Safety-Kleen's Deer Trail, Colorado hazardous waste facility.

AMERICAN ECOLOGY SHAREHOLDERS ELECT NEW DIRECTORS
ROGER P. HICKEY TO SERVE AS CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD
BOISE, Idaho - American Ecology Corporation [NASDAQ: ECOL] today announced that its shareholders elected seven individuals to serve as Directors at the Company's Annual Meeting in Chicago, Illinois on May 30, 2002. Roger P. Hickey of Chicago was appointed to serve as Chairman at the Board of Directors' subsequent meeting.
"I look forward to working with the other highly qualified Directors of American Ecology and the Company's new management team to build shareholder value," Hickey stated. "I believe American Ecology is well positioned to take advantage of ongoing consolidation trends in the hazardous and radioactive waste service industries," he added.
Hickey brings extensive experience in business and finance as President of Chicago Partners, a consulting firm specializing in finance, intellectual property, and business strategy. Hickey has served on the Boards of private companies. As an entrepreneur, Hickey founded and manages an intellectual property development company and an internet financial services company. Hickey previously served as Economic Advisor to the Commissioner of the U.S. International Trade Commission.

Continuing Board members include Edward F. Heil, Paul F. Schutt, and Thomas A. Volini. Joining the Board are new Directors Roger P. Hickey, Roy C. Eliff, John M. Couzens, and American Ecology President and Chief Executive Officer Stephen A. Romano.
Romano joins the Board of Directors after being named President in October 2001, and Chief Executive Officer in March 2002. Romano has been with American Ecology and its subsidiaries for 12 years. Prior to assuming senior executive duties, Romano was Vice President for Business Development and led the due diligence team for the Company's successful acquisition of Envirosafe Services of Idaho (now US Ecology Idaho) in February 2001. Romano brings 22 years of experience in radioactive and hazardous waste management with the Company, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the Department of Energy National Low-Level Radioactive Waste Program, and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
John M. Couzens is President and CEO of Qwest Digital Media, a subsidiary of Anschutz Company of Denver, Colorado. Couzens has been President and CEO of other Anschutz portfolio companies. He was previously Corporate Bank Division Head with Northern Trust Corporation.
Roy C. Eliff is an acquisitions and mergers consultant to solid waste and environmental companies. Previously, Eliff served for 20 years as Vice President of Corporate Development and Acquisitions at Browning Ferris Industries.
